D Day

10/3/15 6:15am-Today is admission day.  Ashley and I decided to get up early and take Koda for a hike.  I'm sure Steven didn't sleep well as we really haven't slept well since May.  We will be admitted sometime this afternoon, after one lucky patient vacates his room to go home.

1:00pm-Running last minute errands all morning while Steven and Ashley were watching the Wisconsin/Iowa game.  Seems like it wouldn't be a big deal but Steven received his PhD from Iowa and Ashley received her Bachelor's from Wisconsin.  Usually there is gnashing of teeth, neither of them like to lose!  The Hawkeyes win and it is now time to go to City of Hope.

3:00pm-We have checked in, found our room, and unpacked.  It's a parade of people, RN, MD, PCA, and before you know it the IV is in and 6 hours of saline starts before the evil chemo is administered. A little about the chemo-he received Dacogen before the donor was found.  Its purpose was to lower the blasts (immature, inefficient cells) and basically hold off the progression of the disease.  Last week he received Fludarabine as an outpatient at COH for 5 days.  Tonight he is getting Melphalan.  These chemos are supposed to punch holes in Steven's bone marrow so the new stem cells can enter the bone marrow and populate.  Better living through chemistry!

Steven gets to order food on demand and orders from a menu when he is hungry.  His room is much bigger than I thought it would be.  He also has a TV (with access to Netflix, so what else could he possibly need?), armoire, two chairs and a bedside table.

I recommend that you call the floor (6 East) before you visit at 626-256-4673.  He is in room 6217.  He will be getting so much evil chemo that I know he will want to feel good when you visit.  A few days will be rough...
No flowers or plants or rubber balloons in the hospital nor in our home.  Too many spores, pollen, etc.
Your cards, prayers and loving thoughts are all we need and so appreciated!  It was very difficult to leave him there when we left.  I liked healthcare better when I was on the other side.
